Indians themselves did not have a tradition of setting up museums of fragmented sculptures, rusted swords and out-of-context paintings. Broken images were immersed in holy water, worn out metal objects were melted down to cast new ones, and terracotta votive objects were left to decay and merge with the very earth from which they were created. The core collection of the Crafts Museum was actually put together to serve as reference material for the craftsmen who were increasingly losing touch with their own traditions in terms of materials, techniques, designs and aesthetics of their arts and crafts due to the sudden changes caused by modern industrialization. Here the craftsman feels free to confine to his tradition or to innovate in response to his new contemporary environment.

Museums in Delhi - Shopping Center Delhi

Delhi Sound and Light Show at Purana Quila India

This historic Purana Qila, which has stood witness to Delhi’s rejuvenation, periods of anarchy, and the rise and fall of empires, is the venue for the spectacular sound and light show which brings alive the history of the capital. The glitzy love stories and action movies of Bollywood attract huge audiences and their stars are national figures. There is a number of cinemas in Delhi, some showing only films in Hindi, some only in English and some in both languages. English-language films are shown, among many others, at the Ritz, Kasmiri Gate, and the Chanakya, Chanakapuri.

The movie that is closest to Delhi’s beating heart is the immensely popular Monsoon Wedding (2001), which was set in the city. Sultans of various dynasties, Turks, Persians, and Afghans made Delhi their political and military headquarters before the Mughal adventurer Babur shattered the army of the then ruling Afghan sultan Ibrahim Lodi in 1526. Later, for good measure, Babur dealt with the turbulent Rajputs in similar fashion. It was, however, Babur’s grandson Akbar who expanded and consolidated the Mughal empire and made the very word “Mughal” synonymous with magnificence, opulence, grandeur and greatness. It is significant that the classical Kathak dance of north India, a masterful blend of the best in Hindu and Islamic aesthetics, arrived at a recognisable point of excellence during Akbar’s benign rule.

Dance in Delhi - Delhi History

Theatres in Delhi India

Despite all efforts the theatre scene in the capital remains pretty dismal. Sitting amongst Lord Krishna and his devotees with Hare Krishna chants going around is indeed an experience. But for those who are seeking more, there is so much to learn and see, than what meets the eye.

The idea behind the upcoming museum is to present Indian history in an interactive manner. Says Dina Nath Das, the brain behind the entire show “it is important to present the story of human evolution to the people, in the right manner. Thus the sound and light presentations accompanied by huge relief and life-like figures are bound to make an impact on an audience, far more than just an exhibition”. The museum will be opened by August for those who want to see the best of science and religion together.

Delhi Worship Places - Delhi Tourist Places

Delhi Birla Mandir India

The Laxmi Narayan Mandir (temple) built by B.D. Birla is a modern Hindu temple dedicated to Laxmi (goddess of wealth) and Narayana (the preserver). It was inaugurated by Gandhi with the stipulation that it should be open to all castes (including the untouchables) and all faiths, so it is more welcoming to foreigners than the average temple.

After visiting so many ancient Hindu temples, it was fun to see a modern functioning one. The whole temple was quite garish, and noisy with chants over the loud speaker system, but it was also strangely peaceful. In the garden there was a tree wound with colored strings, and two women were praying at the foot.

Delhi Worship Places - Delhi Tourism

Delhi Jama Masjid India

The splendid mosque built by Muhammad Ali Shah in the typical Mughal style with two minarets and three domes, lies to the west of the Hussainabad Imambara and is entirely free from pseudo Italian art then in vogue in Lucknow. An impressive red sandstone temple today (the temple has undergone many alterations and additions in the past and was enlarged in the early 19th century), the Digambar Jain Temple is popularly known as Lal Mandir.

The main devotional area of the temple is on the first floor. It is reached by ascending to the terrace after crossing the small courtyard of the temple, surrounded by a colonnade. There are a number of shrines in this area but the main shrine is of Lord Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism. Born in 599 BC in the ancient republic of Vaishali (Bihar) as a prince, he renounced all worldly pleasures and comforts and went in search of 'Moksha' (salvation). Soon he attained keval-jnana (Enlightenment), and spent the rest of his life preaching to the people all over the country about the eternal truth of life and ways to attain Moksha.

Delhi Worship Places - Cultural Delhi

Delhi Hanuman Mandir India

This elegant temple stands on the south-eastern side of Ranmal Lake. It was only a century later, that a jealous devotee named Baba Baghel Singh found this place and built a Gurdwara here.

Delhi Worship Places - Delhi Tourist Places

Delhi The Rail Museum India

National Rail Museum is the focus of Rail Heritage of India a source of fascination and interest in Railways for all. The tomb is set on a platform amidst a garden and is believed to have influenced the design of the Taj Mahal. The structure of the tomb is as magnificent as the Taj Mahal in Agra. The splendor of this grand monument becomes overpowering on entering through the lofty double storied gateway. The fountains with simple yet highly developed engineering skills enhance the beauty of the garden.

Humayun inherited the Mughal dynasty when his father Babur died in 1530. His reign got off to a good start, but his addiction to luxury at the palaces at Agra left the door open for ambitious men to plot behind his back. Ten years into his reign, Humayun was overthrown by the opportunist Sher Shah, who took advantage of Afghan tribesmen to force Humayun into exile in Iran, which was then ruled by the Safavid dynasty.

Sher Shah died in 1545 and his sucessor was never able to assert the authority over the Afghani tribes that Sher Shah had enjoyed. As the remnants of the Shah's regime unraveled, Humayun mounted a restoration army and marched into Delhi in 1555. The imposing structure almost overshadows all other monuments within its vicinity.

The architectural wonder is a mixture of Mughal and Western styles. The columns at the front entrance have bells carved into them and Lutyens designed them with the idea that since the bells could not make sounds, the British rule would never come to an end. Rashtrapati Bhawan is the highlight of Lutyens New Delhi and was completed in 1929 at a cost of 12,53,000. Stretching nearly 1.5 km near Darya Ganj’s Golcha cinema, the bazaar is the only source of income for many of its 200 pavement booksellers.

According to Mr. Subhash Chand Agrawal, President, Sunday Book Bazaar Patri Welfare Association, the market has been a Sunday feature in the area for the past three decades. Not all books here are second-hand. The sellers acquire books from different places. Many publishers, not able to sell the old editions of books, sell them to these pavement booksellers at cheaper prices. Also, loads of books remain unclaimed during transportation through trains and buses which are then auctioned by Railway and other transportation authorities. However, according to one bookseller, Farid Anwar, “books also come from distributors on Ansari Road”. Often, customers with old books lying at home come to sell them to these sellers. The sellers also sell in bulk acting as distributors themselves. Traders dealing in used books come from as far away as Hyderabad to buy their stock here.

What do these book-dealers do during the rest of the week? Some of them have small bookshops while others spend the week preparing for the following Sunday. According to Mr. Agarwal, “buying books atgood prices from different sources is a time-consuming task requiring business acumen and networking skills”. During the week, they also deliver books to various individuals or other sellers within their business network.
Why would someone buy books from here? Obviously they are cheaper. Equally importantly, says Mr. Agarwal, some books which are difficult to find in usual bookstores are easily available here because they are taken off the shelves by publishers due to little demand.

Find More information about
Delhi Shopping Centers ----- Delhi Tourist Places

Delhi Haat India

Dilli Haat Food and Craft Bazaar is a joint project of Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation. The concept is developed to promote the needy artisans and craftsmen all over the country by exhibiting their crafts. The idea is to do away with the middlemen, which exploit these craftsmen. There are as many as 62 stalls at the haat, which are allotted on rotational basis to the craftsmen of different states. The haat is also a venue, which presents authentic regional cuisines of the Sates of India. Besides this, cultural activities like dances, dramas, fashion shows are also organized in the haat.

Near INA market, developed by Delhi Tourism has on display almost everything that would be very typical to a particular region in India. It has been designed to be an upscale version of a haat (generally a weekly traditional market). Unlike the traditional haat where the market itself is mobile and transient, in this case it is the craftspersons who are ever changing - thus offering a kaleidoscopic view of the richness and diversity of Indian culture and handicrafts.

This market is spread over a six acre spread with imaginative traditional rural architecture and provides an ambience for the market. The stone and brickwork paved paths interspersed with grass patches make browsing and ambling fun. The not too large but diverse food court bring the cuisines of different states together.

Find More information about
Delhi Shopping Centers ----- Delhi Tourist Places

Delhi Karol Bagh India

Karol Bagh is located in the heart of the pulsating city , New Delhi. This is one of the oldest shopping areas of the city. It's central location and proximity to the major places and monuments of the city makes it a visitor's delight. This place is mainly famous for it's shopping complex.

Shopping at Karol Bagh
A walk through Karol Bagh market is an unforgettable experience. It's a journey into history, traditional treasure house which mirrors the very best of Indian craftsmen. What makes the shopping even more unique is that the visitor has the options of walking in modern air-conditioned stores or through narrow alleys to traditional shops where often the artisan himself presents his work and also explains the intricacies of his craftsmanship.

Indian Jewellery
The variety of Indian jewellery is mind boggling. From intricately set necklaces in an array of precious stones to inlaid gold anklets to simple silver bangles, India has it all. Jewellery exists in almost everywhere in India as gold is considered the purest form of wealth in Indian society. Ornaments of gold and precious stones have been used from ancient times to decorate gods and goddesses , maharajas and maharanis, and to add sparkle to the religious rituals and ceremonies.

Find More information about
Delhi Shopping Centers ----- Delhi Tourist Places

Delhi Connaught Place India

Connaught Place may now be only one of the many sprawling commercial hubs in Delhi but any Dilliwala will tell you that it is still very much the heart of the city. Here’s proof: distances to Delhi are still measured with CP as the starting point; the world’s largest multinationals have their offices in this complex; Delhi’s glitziest stores, restaurants and watering holes are found here; the postal pincode takes place of pride at 110001; you can get a bus to CP from every Godforsaken little colony in the city; and most important of all no auto or cabbie will ever refuse to take you there!

Major Shopping Centre for Europeans

However, CP took time to catch on. While on your Delhi tour, you will come across the real picture of Connaught Place past. Early houses stood amid haunts of jackals and wild pigs, the Regal Cinema could only attract a dozen patrons, and plum sites were sold off at a bargain two rupees a square yard. Eventually it worked. The airy colonnades punctuated by Palladian arches gave shade from the fierce sun and the stylish shops stole custom from Old Delhi’s Chandni Chowk. There are commercial establishments on the ground floor of the buildings and also on the upper floor, which once had residential apartments.
